James David Holloway, affectionately known as Jimmy or Jim to family and friends, is an August 4th baby-boomer born in Hartford, Connecticut.
At an early age, Jim's love for the Arts was cultivated by his mother, Mary Madeline Walsh, a notable adversary on the New England tennis circuit and an ever-active teacher of gymnastics and dance. From 1961 - 78, Mary was the lone coach of girl's athletics for Northwest Catholic High School. Since her childhood, she was gifted with a vivacious personality and ballroom grace. Jim's father was an intellectual sportsman, found more often than not on the links, fishing offshore from Long Island Sound to Enfield Dam, hunting in the Berkshires, marching with the Governor's Foot Guard as Adjutant or spearheading their annual dog show at the State Armory. After becoming a Marine Sergeant in World War II, Jim Senior began a 45 year career at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, where he managed the Master Mechanic groups at East Hartford and North Haven before retiring to the scenic comforts of Old Simsbury. It's safe to say that Jimmy was reared under the firm guidance of two talented and loving parents, amid the fledgling Rock & Roll, Cold War climate of the 50s, and within New England's poetic and recreational air. In high school, known as "the fastest guy in town", Jim nursed dreams of competing as an Olympian sprinter, but an unfortunate accident away from the football field dashed this ambition. However, not inclined to surrender and accepting this as a sign to move elsewhere, Jimmy pursued more cerebral forms of expression. Positive stage experiences wetted his appetite to perform, and to master this craft he studied musical theater with Dr. Horace Grant at Boston Conservatory of Music and voice at the renowned Hartt College of Music under the parental tutelage of Moshe Paranov. In the early seventies, Jim was a lead singer for the popular group called The Backdoor Men. Several bands later, he managed to sing his way up and down the Northeast college circuit. During the same time period, his penchant for histrionics gave vent to summer stock and off Broadway performances with the Circle Theater and the New Haven and Hartford Stage Companies. Boston After Dark lauded Jim's characterization of Arthur Miller's John Proctor as "a most realistic portrayal of Miller's character. Holloway's stage presence commanded attention and a soulful reply." His interpretation of Hamlet and other classical performances brought similar reviews. Apart from stage life, Jim's social consciousness prompted him to manage the University of Hartford Premed Society, the local Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter, a March of Dimes fund raising campaign, the student government council, school newspaper assignments, an inner-city educational program, American Heart Association bloodmobiles and a four handicap on the links. Blessed with versatility, Jimmy graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology, and led the UHart football team to a top ten national ranking as a speedster halfback (9.3 for the 100), wide receiver, kickoff and punt return specialist. As holder of the school scoring record, Jim ran for nearly 300 yards and four touchdowns in a skirmish with Assumption College. Celtics love to sing. Possessed of a lively mystic heritage, Jimmy attributes his innate love of song to the spirit of his Irish (Walsh, McGrath, McNabb, McGillicuddy, O'Sullivan, O'Ryan, O'Manion, Murphy, et als.) ancestors. His Scotch Irish grandmother, Celia McNabb, lived to be nearly 101. Sitting on the front porch of the family's old Griswold Road estate, she often remarked to her "bonny lad", "Of course you have the gift, Shamus. It's in the blood." Those privileged to read or hear his poetry and music plainly declare Jim was born to write and sing. Although he has chosen to shun the limelight and instead create merely for the joy of bringing rich inspirations to life, he has privately written volumes of songs since his youth. Even so, his insistent friends have finally convinced him to become more public, and a number of Jim's original melodies and lyrics will be unveiled by Star Harbor Films. In 1977, destiny immersed Jim at the forefront of the computer graphics, animation and special effects software revolution. For the next score, he collaborated with video, television and motion picture professionals on a wide variety of creative projects. This tenure provided a deep education in behind the scenes aspects of TV, film and video production. It carried Jim through the hallowed halls of Fortune 500 companies from Maine to Silicon Valley, to Hollywood and the sprawling Texas film community. Subsequently, Jim graduated as a Film Producer from the Hollywood Film Institute. Throughout this progressive trek, Jim's many colleagues, friends and clients have come to recognize his eye for beauty and a knack for creating stunning, appealing artwork. While Jim is preferably quiet and unassuming, Marquis' Who's Who in America (and in the Southwest) has acknowledged his accomplishments in the fields of design, writing and publishing. Ca. 1990, a sage and learned German monk, Dr. Harald Eder, OSC, invited Jim to come to his mission near San Miguel del Milagro in Nativitas, Mexico and spend some time in reflection. Intense weeks of prayer, physical labor and spiritual excursions at this Tlaxcalan retreat served to deepen Jim's understanding and appreciation of the national icon of this warmhearted country. During several visits, in collaboration with Father Eder, he authored and illustrated the Marian book This detailed study of the history and symbology of Blessed Juan Diego's cape, known as the Holy Tilma, was an instant success. Visibly striking a chord in the hearts of souls devoted to the Mother of God, it sold out soon after being released. Moreover, this experience left Jim a changed man. In thanksgiving for their loving intercession, he translated the stories of San Miguel del Milagro and Nuestra Senhora de Ocotlan from Mexican and Náhuatl into English. With the assistance of Fr. Robert J. Fox of South Dakota, knowledge of these shrines, suppressed outside of Mexico since World War I, was again released to the world. In the past ten years, literally thousands of pilgrims have made the journey to both holy sites, returned with miraculous water from their respective wells and worked numerous acts of charity in turn. The mystery of man's role in God's plan governs all Jim's imaginings, perceptions, contemplations. Today Star Harbor Films and Star Harbor Design owe their inception and being to Jim's artistry, wholesomeness, single-minded purpose and tireless spirit as a photographer, graphic designer, composer and author. If our Web site catches your eye, thank Jim's esthetic sensibilities and innovative vision the insight and energy for its every word, drawing, composition and song. At great risk to his vanity, or as Jim would say, "As an act of humiliation", he has placed some of his "very early" journals at Windmill Pointe. Poetry lovers and critics may review his beginning notes there in hopes that even one individual might come to appreciate the tenderness of beginning, i.e following your heart's longings, no matter how pitiful or paltry these first steps might be. Windmill Pointe, a Star Harbor division (formerly DCTV producers) promotes classical literature, art and genealogical studies on the Net. For those inclined to family history trivia, Jimmy's Holloways arrived at Jamestown and have resided in Poquoson, Charles River Parish since 1622. Formerly of Dover and Berkshire, England, his paternal grandparents include three Colonial Virginia governors, Lord De la Warre, 900 uninterrupted years of Welsh princes, kings and nobles of the Mathews clan, and several proved lineages to Pepin, Charlemagne and the House of David. In 1992 Jimmy lost his heart to a Lone Star Belle, former model Elaine Marie Drake. Mutually adventuresome, they married at the Shrine of the Holy House in the romantic town of Loreto, Italy. A medieval hilltop city overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Loreto was described by Saint Therese, the Little Flower as a place she could not remain in without dying of joy. Herein can be found the House of the Holy Family of Nazareth, angelically transported from the Holy Land in the 13th century. The basilica and fortress encasing the shrine, whick took one hundred years to build, is considered "the ultimate Renaissance masterpiece." Loreto has provided spiritual inspiration for many artists, writers, composers, kings, nobles, popes and saints. It became the perfect backdrop for Jim's screenplay "DELIVER US FROM EVIL". Currently being packaged for funding, return soon to see who agrees to star in it, and track its development. |
